BSS Audio's proprietary digital SoundWeb engine has been installed as a solution to the eight-second reverberation time in the large St. Patrick's Basilica, Lough Derg, in the county of Donegal, Ireland. Acoustician Martin Grainger, of Omagh-based Grainger Communication, has been working at Lough Derg for almost 20 years. "The Basilica was built around 1910 and the sound has been like this for years," Grainger said. The Body English nightclub, a new addition to the Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel, has installed the new dbx ZonePro 640 Digital Zone processor. The Mohegan Sun Resort/Casino's (Uncasville, Conn.) live performance venue, the Wolf Den, has recently installed a QSC ISIS WideLine system. Mohegan Sun Lead audio engineer, Eugene "Gino" Mulcahy, and Jeff Mele, president of Waterbury, Conn.-based North American Theatrics Ltd., contributed to the design of the Wolf Den audio system. "Everyone from Alice Cooper and the Blues Brothers to Cheap Trick and Chick Corea play this place," Mulcahy says. "That's why one of our main objectives with QSC's WideLine boxes was to supply serious sound that is so good that visiting acts can feel free to leave their own systems on the truck. Welcome to the second edition of Blair's Blog, where Blair Jackson, an editor at Mix for more than 20 years, brings our tiny audio world into the bigger picture—or in his own words: Forget about The Blob. The monster that's devouring the Internet is The Blog, and look, ma, I got one! What is going to pop up in this space every two weeks is a mystery at this point, but it'll probably have something to do with music or movies or TV or pop culture in general, and have some sort of audio/music industry slant to it. Sometimes, like this time, it'll be kinda long. Other times, it'll actually be pithy and to the point. (Though doesn't that defeat the purpose of a blog, which is to drone on endlessly?) So read on!

Personally, I hate cell phones. Yeah, they're occasionally convenient to have around and there's a decent chance one will get you out of a crisis, but I don't think having two-thirds of the civilized world blabbing away on the streets and in their cars and even in restaurants night and day is necessarily a great step forward for Western Civilization. When I remember to, I carry the most basic Nokia cell there is and its three years old, so it doesn't have much in the way of bells and whistles. I never learned how to program it; I let my kids do it.

My wife, Regan, on the other hand, loves her cell phone. She got a plan with free nights and weekends, and she recently upgraded to one of those fancy little jobs with the full-color screen, text messaging and Internet capabilities. She spent hours going through the manual programming a zillion numbers and learning all the functions: It slices and dices! It removes embarrassing body odor! It makes your boring friends sound interesting!

And then came that point that arrives for every cell phone user: the ringtone choice. On my Stone Age model, I had a choice of maybe five rinky-dink tones that ranged from horrifically bad to merely annoying. I settled on something that sounds like a Bach riff played on a toy keyboard by mice. By contrast, Regan had all sorts of choices on her fancy phone. Picky sort that she is, however, she didn't really like any of them. That's when our kids sprang into action and introduced her to the exciting world of downloadable ringtones. No more ""Pachelbe's Canon" (the ringtone on her previous cell) or "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" for her. She was going to find something cool; ideally, something that reflected her personality and her taste in music. This turned out to be more difficult than it seemed. MORE

Drawmer has introduced the DSL424 TwoPlusTwo Gate/Compressor, which combines a pair of noise gates and two soft/hard knee compressors with variable threshold limiting. The 1U, four-channel device can be configured as four individual processors or as a stereo linked pair of compressor/limiters with a stereo linked pair of gates. The DSL424 has +4 dB XLR analog I/O and 1/4-inch jacks for key inputs.

Edirol is shipping the UA-25 USB audio/MIDI interface (Mac/Win; $295). The device offers mic preamps with phantom power on TRS/XLR combo inputs, balanced +4 dBu analog I/O, digital I/O, and it can accept high-impedance instrument inputs. The Direct Monitoring switch allows you to hear the input signal without latency. The UA-25 also offers a limiter on the analog inputs and supports ASIO 2.0, WDM, and Core Audio.

Prominy has announced the PCP-80 (Mac/Win; $199) sampling library, which features the sounds of the Yamaha CP-80 electric grand piano. The PCP-80 is a 15 GB library of 24-bit, 96 kHz samples for Steinberg HALion, Tascam GigaStudio, Native Instruments Kontakt, and Emagic EXS24.

Recordare has released a Mac OS X version of its Dolet for Finale plug-in. Dolet for Finale 2.0 lets Finale users exchange files with programs that support the MusicXML format, including Sibelius, PhotoScore Professional, and Virtual Composer; and write files that can be read by programs including Igor Engraver and MuseBook Score. In addition, Finale 2004 users can read files created in Finale 2005. Recordare has also released maintenance updates for its Dolet for Finale plug-in for Windows and its Dolet for Sibelius plug-in for Macintosh and Windows.

TOA Electronics has announced the ME Series of reference monitors, which is available in two models. The ME-160 is a 2-way monitor with a 6.3-inch low-frequency driver and a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter. The ME-120 is a full-range reference monitor with a single 4.7-inch driver. According to the manufacturer, both models offer high power handling, a flat frequency response, and magnetic shielding for AV applications.

Toontrack and EastWest have announced that an Audio Units version of Drumkit from Hell Superior (aka DFH-Superior) is now available as a free download for registered users. Pro Tools users are supported in Mac OS X and Windows through the Re-wire version, which is also downloadable for free.

Wharfedale Pro has announced the DM2.0, a super-cardioid dynamic microphone designed for use in high-SPL situations.
